Buzz Aldrin points the problem with Elon's plan for Mars

SpaceX creator and CEO Elon Musk's strategies to colonize Mars are "bodacious," says Buz Aldrin, who, within NASA's July 1969 Apollo 11 objective, was main men on the moon.

While Aldrin respects Musk's ambition, he also highlights that the technology billionaire is more centered on planing a trip to Mars than what folks can do when they turn up there.

"He's a travelling person. He develops rockets," says Aldrin, speaking in Austin on Thursday at the SXSW Celebrations & Conferences.

Aldrin, now 87, recalls speaking with Musk about his programs based on the red planet 3 or 4 years back over lunch.
Aldrin summarizes the technology entrepreneur's response this way: "'We know the way to get to Mars. We will build a huge rocket, put a dragon at the top, and go land on Mars.'" Musk has even called the maybe Mars-bound spacecraft Dragon.

At meal, Aldrin pressed Musk about another steps: "Well, now, whenever your dragon lands on Mars with people, will there be heading to be anything down there that you can are in or do?"

Musk responded that SpaceX would send an unmanned rocket to Mars first, but "it appeared as if he hadn't considering that a lot of thought," says Aldrin. "He's a vehicles person. He's not really a property person. He's not really a contractor of towers."

The visit to Mars is long enough that you can't go, stay every day and keep coming back, says Aldrin; the bare minimum timeframe a person could stick to Mars will be a year . 5.

"You must are in something. You must prepare for all that," says Aldrin.

In Sept, Musk provided his most complete plan yet about how precisely to go to and colonize Mars. The program includes specific outlines of rocket boosters and spaceships to make it happen, but it remains brief on details concerning developing a habitable arrangement when travelers occur.

While ideas for occupying Mars remain typically theoretical and being designed, Aldrin is interested in the mission to make towns on the red entire world.

"Our purpose, I really believe, is to stay the earth Mars and I feel that should be our aim," says Aldrin.
